Sulphur Plays Many Roles In Service to U.S. Industry WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 A wakes up, washes, shaves, eats breakfast, takes a vitamin pill, reads the newspaper and drives to work. Everything he has used in the process- his own eyesight- contains sulphur, or required sulphur in the making. This all-pervading element, says the National Geographic Society, is a keystone of the industrial economy.

Rubber is vulcanized with the use of surphur. Gasoline is refined with it. Paper, textiles, leather, ivory, plastics, fertilizers, exmedicines, wool, disinfectants, plosives, weed killers, mustard special steels, oils, bleaches, plasters, vitamin B1, synthetic fabries, perfumes, printing inks, cellulose, paint, dyes, insecticides, toothpaste, sheep dip and soaps also contain sulphur, as do some 32,000 articles in common use. A vital constituent of plant cells, organic sulphur compounds part of animal protein and are found in body enzymes. In the human eye, light acts on sulphur compounds in the retina to produce vision.

Although it is widely distribut- red through the earth's crust, much sulphur is chemically combined with other elements such as iron. Production of free sulphur from these ores is expensive. In certain places, however, sulphur is found in uncombined deposits. Rich sources on the island of Sicily enjoyed a virtual production monopoly until 1903, when the Frasch process was invented to tap deposits under the marshy land of the United States Gulf Coast. Through soil too soft to permit tunnel mines, wells driven down to the stone formation that contains the sulphur, Each consists of three pipes, one inside another.

Superheated water is down the outside pipe. This melts the sulphur, turning it into a brownish-yellow liquid. It is forced up the middle pipe by compressed air sent down the smallest pipe. Poured out in mammoth vats on the surface, the sulphur cools in golden plateaus containing as many as 500,000 tons apiece. Some sulphur is loaded hot into "Ther.

mos bottle" barges which keep it liquid on the way to manufacturing plants..
