Why do vets recommend Trupanion? ›

Veterinarians know a Trupanion policy can help your pet with unexpected injuries and illnesses. That's why over 2,300 veterinary hospitals and more than 10,000 veterinarians have partnered with Trupanion to offer Vet Direct Pay, so you don't have to be out of pocket for your entire bill.

TRUPANION: We offer one simple plan for all dogs and cats that covers all new illnesses and injuries with no payout limits for life. This means no annual renewals, either. Just one plan for the life of your pet. OTHER PROVIDERS: Many have annual limits, annual renewals, multiple exclusions, and confusing plans.

Like most other pet health insurance providers, we do not cover spaying or neutering for dogs for a specific reason. Spaying and neutering are both considered “voluntary procedures” (things considered unnecessary for the health of your pet) as well as something you can plan and budget for.

We don't. Once enrolled, your monthly costs will never go up based on your pet's age.

No vet exam is required to enroll, but exam required for claim payout, and yearly exam for future claim payout.

You can enroll your pet any time with Trupanion before their 14th birthday. Pets enrolled prior to age 14 can nevertheless enjoy full coverage for life. Wondering why age 14 is the cutoff? We love pets at any age, but we do have to be reasonable.

This policy contains a 30-day waiting period for illnesses. This policy contains a 5-day waiting period for accidents.

For comparison, many other pet insurance providers have deductibles that renew annually, meaning you'll keep paying them year after year. With Trupanion, you also have the option to customize your deductible to fit your budget and lifestyle. Simply choose any deductible between $0 and $1,000.

Lifetime policies

These policies cover your pet for their entire life, taking care of expenses for both illnesses and injuries. Although they are the most expensive option, they offer the highest level of protection, with coverage limits that reset annually upon policy renewal.

With Trupanion, you can visit any licensed veterinarian in the US, Puerto Rico, or Canada. You can use Trupanion coverage for eligible costs wherever your pet needs care — from routine veterinary practices to specialty animal hospitals and emergency veterinary clinics.

We understand that many other pet insurance companies operate this way, but at Trupanion, we understand that pets sometimes need care beyond their regular veterinarian. If you are referred to a specialist or visit an emergency hospital, you can still use your coverage on all eligible conditions and treatments.

Typical deductibles range from $0 to $1000, but averages are typically closer to $100, $250, or $500. For example, if your plan has a $200 deductible, you will have to pay the first $200 out of pocket before the insurance company will start reimbursing you for vet bills.

Our simple waiting periods mean that injuries that take place five days after enrollment and any illnesses that develop 30 days after enrollment are eligible for coverage (as long as there's no evidence that the illness or injury already existed).

Just submit your invoice, and we'll reimburse you as quickly as possible — over 70% of claims are paid within 24 hours.

Routine or preventive care: I. We do not cover routine or preventive care including, but not limited to: Vaccinations, titer tests, genetic/DNA tests, screening/wellness diagnostic tests, and parasite prevention. These are expected costs for which You can budget.
